William Barnard started as the new executive director of Glencoe Youth Services last month. He previously worked at Adidas and has a background in fashion. Barnard and his wife, Nadia, have a son, Avery, 7.
Q: How did you started at Adidas?
A: I told my mom in the fifth grade I was going to be a fashion designer. But growing up my mom was the youth manager at my church so that started my love working with kids.
Q: What got you interested in this job in Glencoe?
A: The opportunity to leave my fingerprint on something and try to create something that has never been done because my background is fashion and marketing. I wanted to create something that was new and fresh and bring some new energy to the organization.
Q: What do you specifically enjoy about working with kids?
A: Their honesty. They are brutally honest all the time whether you like it or not, and I think that is perfect for someone who is in a position of leadership. You have to listen to the kids and they will tell you exactly what they want.
Q: What goals do you have in mind for GYS?
A: I really want to establish consistent attendance, and working with the team we are focused on growing attendance and social-emotional learning and targeting and bringing awareness to mental health, anxiety and stress and create experiences so the kids deal with these things and also have fun.
Q: What are your initial impressions of the Glencoe community?
A: I love it. Everyone has been so welcoming. Everyone is willing to collaborate on the work the team has put in. We are seeing that people are into the idea of working with each other and we just have to do it. Our goal as a team is not to think too much, just try it. If it fails, we go back to the drawing board. We are focused on action, not just to talk a good game.
