"We can, and must, build on the extraordinary resources already in place: resources that are flourishing in some few instances, but that are usually underfunded, undervalued, and largely unknown; resources that are almost always run by underpaid staff and dedicated individuals and groups of volunteers. We must do everything that is within our power to do, so that all of today’s adolescents enjoy equal opportunity to become the workers, parents, and leaders of tomorrow."
--Wilma S. Tisch, Co-Chair of Task Force on Youth Development and Community Programs for the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development

Mission Statement:
GYS is a non-profit community social service agency which provides recreational, educational and social service opportunites to high school aged youth living in New Trier Township.
How and why did GYS begin?
Gencoe Youth Services (GYS) was formed in 1971 after alarm over the death of a local teen from a drug overdose, and community concern that there was no place for the teens of Glencoe to go.
After humble beginnings in the basement of the Glencoe Public Library and moving five times in the subsequent seven years, GYS has been situated at its current location since the early 80’s where we continue with the mission to give the teens of Glencoe a place to call their own.
GYS offers teens a place where they can confide in staff, meet new friends and participate in a wide range of activities that are geared toward aiding the youth of the community, and the community at large.
Youth Board
Students who frequent GYS are encouraged to become involved with the youth board. The youth board meets once a month during the school year and members decide on activities to participate in, what new games, movies, etc should be purchased for the center and they are also expected and encouraged to be an integral part of our social service and fundraising activities. The youth board gives the members a chance to make important decisions about GYS and to help them feel as though they are making a difference.
Recreational Programs
We sponsor a broad range of recreational activities in order to appeal to the diverse interests of local youth. Pool tournaments, movie nights, and Rock Band competitions are common events at GYS. As the weather warms so does the use of the baseball, tennis and basketball fields/courts located right next door to our building. We are always looking for an opportunity to head out of GYS and stretch our legs. In summer we head to Great America, participate in paintball, play Frisbee Golf and head to the Glencoe Beach. Winter sends us out to movies, broomball at Watts and Chicago Bulls games.
Educational Programs
We understand the importance of learning and we design programs to complement and enhance the instruction students receive at school. We work to educate through cultural events, in house speakers and field experience. We also hold study nights where students are provided individual attention and one-on-one guidance with homework. 3 computers with internet access are available for homework, research and e-mail
Social Service Programs
GYS gives back to the community that supports it. Our students volunteer their time at many Glencoe events as well as participating in social service projects outside of our community. These activities raise awareness while providing a vehicle for students to address current concerns
